Foundry Virtual Tabletop (Foundry VTT)

Overview

Foundry VTT is a self-hosted, modern virtual tabletop application that revolutionized the digital RPG space upon its release in 2020. Developed by Andrew Clayton, it recently celebrated its five-year anniversary with the launch of Version 13. Unlike its subscription-based competitors, Foundry provides a powerful, high-performance environment that runs in a web browser while giving the Game Master total control over their data and hosting. It is widely considered the "Gold Standard" for power users and tactical GMs.

Descripion

Foundry VTT is built on modern web technologies (Node.js and WebGL), allowing for hardware-accelerated visuals that outclass almost any other browser-based platform. It is a "buy-once, own-forever" product where the GM hosts the server locally or via a cloud service, and players connect for free through their browser. Its true strength lies in its modularity; with thousands of community-made modules, a GM can transform the software from a simple dice roller into a fully automated, cinematic video-game-like experience.

Key features

One-Time Purchase Model

There are no monthly fees or feature gating. Once you buy a license, you own the software and all future core updates. You can host an unlimited number of players, and they never have to pay a cent to join your games.

Dynamic Lighting and Vision

Foundry's lighting engine is best-in-class. It supports per-token vision, "fog of war" that persists between sessions, and complex light sources (like flickering torches or pulsing magical orbs) that interact realistically with walls and doors in real-time.

Extensive Module Library

The community has created over 2,000 free modules that add everything from "3D Dice" and "Animated Weather" to "Automated Combat" that handles math, resistance, and condition tracking automatically when a player rolls an attack.

V13 "ApplicationV2" UI

The 2025/2026 updates introduced a reimagined user interface. It is faster, more accessible, and allows for much better window management, reducing the "screen clutter" that previously plagued the software during complex sessions.

Self-Hosting and Data Privacy

Because you host the server, your maps, character sheets, and campaign notes are stored on your own hardware (or your chosen cloud provider). You aren't reliant on a third-party company's servers staying online to access your game.

Massive System Support

While it is famous for its "premium" level support for Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e, Foundry supports over 200 different RPG systems, many of which feature official, high-quality modules from publishers like Free League and Paizo.

Blades in the Dark
ClockSync is a browser-based tool for game masters that shares progress clocks, counters, timers and switches with players in real time. What it does: Create and manage Blades in the Dark-style progress clocks Share your clock board live with players — no login required Link items through a trigger system: when one clock fills, others react automatically Use counters for resources, timers for pressure, switches for states Trigger system: Items can be linked so that game events cascade. A clock filling up can start a timer, flip a switch, or advance another clock — creating the kind of ticking-bomb tension that makes sessions memorable. Built for Blades, works everywhere: Designed with Forged in the Dark games in mind, but ClockSync works with any system that uses progress clocks — Apocalypse World, Trophy, Agon, or your own homebrew.

W.A.R.P. - Warriors Across Rapid Periods

Rules-light
Sci-fi
Grab your gear, strap on you A.G.E. DEVICE and put on your favorite playlist of songs that people think are patriotic but actually criticize the system! Personally I recommend Fortunate Son and In the Army Now! Warriors Across Rapid Periods (W.A.R.P.) is a RPG about a group of moderately trained young adults duped by the military industrial complex to strap highly experimental time-travel technology to themselves and carry out missions of dubious morality. You will need a GM (called a Commander), 2 - 4 players, a bunch of dice (d4, d6, d8, d10 and d12), paper or index cards, snacks and a (non-)alcoholic beverage of your choosing! The rulebook is an in-universe training manual for fresh recruits and contains all the rules for players, some guidance for Commanders and a sample mission. W.A.R.P. works on a simple system: Characters are represented by 4 stats (Pace, Uptake, Tough, Strong), each with a value of d4, d6 or d8 Enemies, landscapes, challenges, etc. are represented as two types of Threats rated from d4 up to d12 Gear has limited uses and gives specific bonuses You roll your stat against a Threat if you roll lower, you take damage by reducing your stats (e.g. d6 -> d4) if you roll equal or higher, you beat an Immediate Threat or reduce Persistent Threat (e.g. d8 -> d6) The cool part comes in when you die (or just want to retry a section)! Each character has a number of Time-Quarks at their disposal that allow them to either: Go back in time a brief moment individually to try to beat the Threat again Return as a group to the start of the mission, retaining all future knowledge - you don't have to roll again for the Threats already faced! W.A.R.P. is best played as a "beer and pretzels" game. Its intended tone is over the top dumb 80s or 90s "Hoorah" military action with touchstones such as: Movies like Commando, Independence Day, Predator, Men in Black Video games like the newer Call of Duty games, Sniper Elite series
