Neon Odyssey is a retro-futuristic space opera tabletop roleplaying game built on Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E, created by Avantris Entertainment, the studio behind the Legends of Avantris actual play series and the earlier Kickstarter The Crooked Moon. Avantris was co-founded by twins Mikey and Richie Gilder, and Mikey Gilder is its creative director. The game is a trilogy of more than 1,400 pages in three books: the Outrunner's Handbook, the Cosmic Codex and the Overdrive Expansion, with two adventures, Stardust Rhapsody and Starlight Brigade, sold alongside. The Kickstarter funded on 3 June 2026 after a 30-day campaign, raising $16,139,970 from 49,116 backers against a goal of $60,000, which Kickstarter bills as the most-funded tabletop roleplaying game in crowdfunding history. Estimated delivery is November 2027, so the game has not yet shipped.
Description
Players take on Outrunners, bounty hunters who travel the Stardust Rhapsody, a synthwave-flavoured galaxy of 30 worlds, six interdimensional realms and 40 missions. Press coverage pitches the tone as "Star Wars meets Cowboy Bebop" with a neon coat of paint. The Game Master (GM) runs the missions, which are meant to be played as a campaign across the galaxy.
The game asks a table to know D&D 5.5E, because it reworks that system and does not replace it, so a group that has never played D&D will need the underlying rules too. It also asks for patience, because the books were still in production when this entry was written. It suits groups who already play 5.5E and want a colourful science fiction setting without learning a new rules engine.
