OpenFray

A DnD 5e combat console for Game Masters.

Overview

OpenFray is a free, open-source combat console for Game Masters running
Dungeons and Dragons 5e https://groupfinder.gg/library/dungeons-dragons-5e-2014
games. It is an initiative tracker that holds the whole encounter. It opens in a browser tab, needs nothing installed, and works without an account. Signing in is free, and it carries a Game Master's fights between devices. It keeps the parts of an encounter that are easiest to lose track of: initiative order, hit points, conditions and effects, concentration, and monster resources such as legendary actions, recharge abilities and spell slots. Effects have two ends, so OpenFray knows both who has advantage and who is granting it, and works that into the rolls. Every roll goes through one place and is logged with the dice behind it. A whole group can make one saving throw at once, with each creature's resistances and immunities already worked in. The table gets a screen of its own. A shared link lets the players follow the turn order and the game log on their phones, showing only what the Game Master chooses to give away. The built-in compendium ships the 2024 and 2014 rules, with opt-in libraries from Kobold Press and OpenFray's own books. Creatures and spells can be built by hand, pasted in as JSON, or taken from a D&D Beyond stat block with the free browser add-on. Compatible with Dungeons and Dragons
5.5e https://groupfinder.gg/library/dungeons-dragons-55e-2024
and 5e.

Key features

Manage everything from one screen

Initiative tracker, stat blocks, controls, and game log all on the same screen. No tabs, no digging, nothing to reconcile between rounds.

Use features straight from the stat block

Click an action, a spell, a reaction, a legendary action, anything straight from the stat block to use it.

Player view

Share a link with your players and the turn order, conditions, and game log follow the fight on their screens as you run it. It's read-only — there is nothing there to press.

Over 2000 creatures included

Basic Rules (2024 and 2014), Tome of Beasts, Creature Codex and OpenFray's proprietary libraries included for free.

Relationships, not just creatures

Effects have two ends. The barbarian's Reckless Attack grants advantage against him; Vicious Mockery debuffs the goblin's next swing. OpenFray records which end is which and works it into the roll, whichever side is rolling.

Resources that count themselves down

Recharge abilities, legendary actions, legendary resistance, spell slots, concentration, and reactions all tick as you play — so the mage's last slot is a fact, not a guess.

Conditions that expire on the right turn

A save-ends effect is rolled at the start or the end of the turn, whichever you chose. Timed effects count themselves down and clear. Concentration is checked the moment the damage lands.

A scratchpad, not a second character sheet

OpenFray never asks you to model a player's build. It tracks what just happened and what has to be remembered this round — which is why it stays fast instead of becoming a worse VTT.

Actual Play
Tabletop Time is a YouTube channel, podcast, and livestreaming phenomenon devoted to collaborative storytelling through tabletop roleplaying games, as well as miniatures and other somewhat "nerdy" hobbies. It was created by Jazza and his brother Shad to utilize the TTRPG system they invented, Cogent Roleplay. The initial run lasted two years, but due to Jazza's increasingly busy schedule, a four year hiatus was necessary. Now it's back with a vengeance and a new cast. Actual Play
