Achtung! Cthulhu 2d20

English
Horror
Achtung! Cthulhu is a pulpy World War II horror tabletop roleplaying game in which Allied and resistance agents fight a secret war against Nazi occultists and the Cthulhu Mythos. It was created by Chris Birch and published by Modiphius Entertainment, which launched the setting in 2012 as an adventure series for Call of Cthulhu, with versions for other systems announced. The 2d20 edition, with rules designed by Nathan Dowdell, launched on March 9, 2021, as a standalone game with a Player's Guide and a Gamemaster's Guide. The 2d20 edition replaced the earlier versions of Achtung! Cthulhu, which were written for other systems, and uses the same 2d20 system as Dune: Adventures in the Imperium. Description Players take on soldiers, spies and resistance fighters in a war where the real enemy is behind the enemy. Campaigns run from 1939 to a confrontation in Antarctica in 1946, with scenarios in places such as occupied Czechoslovakia and Dunkirk. The Gamemaster (GM) runs the war, the Black Sun cultists and the creatures they command, including undead, Deep Ones and a Shoggoth. The tone leans towards action rather than dread. The supernatural is a threat to be overcome, at least for a while, which sets it apart from the more fatalistic horror of Call of Cthulhu. The game asks for a table that wants a combat-heavy war story with a thin layer of cosmic horror.

Fallout: The Roleplaying Game (2021)

English
Sci-fi
Fallout: The Roleplaying Game is a post-apocalyptic tabletop roleplaying game set in the Fallout universe, published by Modiphius Entertainment on its 2d20 system. Modiphius acquired the Fallout licence from Bethesda in 2017 and released the wargame Fallout: Wasteland Warfare in 2018. The roleplaying game entered beta in 2019, was delayed by COVID-19, and released digitally in March 2021 and in physical form in July 2021. The core rulebook is a 438-page hardcover with an 18-page introductory adventure, "With a Bang or a Whimper". The game uses the 2d20 system, which Modiphius also uses for Achtung! Cthulhu 2d20 and Dune: Adventures in the Imperium. Description Players create survivors in 2077, after nuclear war has devastated most of the planet, and help rebuild civilization. Characters can be vault dwellers, ghouls, super mutants or robots such as Mister Handy, and they can ally with or work against factions like the Brotherhood of Steel. The Game Master (GM) runs a wasteland that mixes post-apocalyptic danger and retro-futuristic style with dark humor, and the book includes story hooks, random encounter tables and random generation of locations and loot. The game asks a table to be comfortable with survival and resource management. Radiation, crafting, building a settlement and tracking Action Points are all part of play, and the GM chapter addresses tone and quest structure.

City of Mist

English
Rules-medium
City of Mist is a noir urban fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about ordinary people who carry the soul of a legend inside them, created by Amit Moshe and published by Son of Oak Game Studio. It was funded on Kickstarter in 2016, where it raised $104,313 from 1,762 backers, and released in 2017. Modiphius Entertainment co-published it from 2018. The game was split into a Player's Guide and a Master of Ceremonies (MC) Toolkit in 2019, and a Starter Box followed in November 2020. It won a Silver ENnie in 2017, a Gold ENnie for interior art in 2018 and a Gold ENnie for Best Aid/Accessory in 2021, and in 2024 it won French awards, the Graal d'Or and the Grog d'Or. The system loosely evolved from Powered by the Apocalypse, and its spiritual successor is Legend in the Mist. Description Players take on Rifts, people whose everyday selves are joined to a mythical identity, such as a figure from legend, folklore or fairy tale, in a rain-soaked city where a hidden world of myth presses against the mundane one. The MC, the game's name for its Game Master, runs mysteries and conflicts in a noir setting, and the characters balance the lives they are trying to keep with the powers they have inherited. The game asks a table for investment in character drama. Each character has two identities that pull in different directions, and the story often turns on which one takes the lead. It suits groups who like detective stories, moral compromise and personal stakes, more than groups who want to optimise a build.

Ironsworn

English
Rules-light
Ironsworn is a low-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game of perilous quests in the Ironlands, a Norse-inspired frontier, designed by Shawn Tomkin with illustrations by Joshua Meehan. It was released in 2018 by Tomkin Press, and Modiphius Entertainment also publishes it. The game is built for solo, co-op and guided play, and its rules were designed for refereeless play. The Digital Edition is a free download that includes a rulebook of about 270 pages, a play kit and printable asset cards. It won the 2019 Gold ENNIE for Best Free Game/Product, and Forbes named it a top RPG product of 2022 and a leading fantasy solo RPG. It has been translated into German (System Matters, 2021) and French (500 Nuances de Geek, 2024). The system loosely evolved from Powered by the Apocalypse, and it was followed by the science fiction sequel Ironsworn: Starforged (2022). Description Players take on a lone hero or a small group in the Ironlands, with vows that drive each quest, whether it is protecting a village or hunting a monster. Players assign points to five stats (edge, heart, iron, shadow and wits) and track health, spirit and supply. In guided play a Game Master (GM) moderates, in co-op play players work together without a GM, and in solo play one player controls a lone character. The game asks a table to tell the story as well as roll for it. Results often have mechanical effects, but the players work out the narrative outcome, and oracle tables answer questions and generate story details. One reviewer praised the elegant mechanics but found progression "a little stingy", and another criticised the stock-photo-heavy rulebook. It suits solo players and groups without a GM.

Ironsworn: Starforged

English
Rules-light
Ironsworn: Starforged is a science fiction tabletop roleplaying game of spacefaring quests for solo, co-op and guided play, designed by Shawn Tomkin and published by Tomkin Press. It is a sci-fi reinvention of Ironsworn, which won the 2019 ENNIE for Best Free Game, and it is described as more than a reskin. The Kickstarter campaign ran from 27 April to 27 May and raised $347,984 from 6,782 backers against a goal of $15,000. A retail release was slated for the fourth quarter of 2022 as a Deluxe Edition with a core rulebook of more than 400 pages, co-published by Absolute Tabletop with Modiphius Entertainment distributing to retail stores. A seafaring expansion, Sundered Isles, followed in 2024 and uses the Starforged system. The system directly evolved from Ironsworn, and it was followed by the expansion Sundered Isles. Description Players take on spacefaring heroes who travel to unknown parts of the galaxy and undertake quests. Prior experience with Ironsworn is not required, and the game keeps the original's solo play, with Guided (a Game Master (GM) moderates), Co-op (no GM) and Solo modes. Guided setup exercises cover campaign truths, character creation and starting situations, and the book includes generation rules for ships, planets, settlements and people. The game asks a table to build its own setting and story. The oracle tables suggest what happens, but the players decide what it means, and a solo player has to be comfortable playing both sides of the fiction. It suits groups and solo players who want a science fiction game with no preparation, more than groups who want a published setting and plot.
