Salvage Union

Beginner-friendly
English
Salvage Union is a RPG set in a Post-Apoc world where MegaCorps rules pockets of civilization and nomads on giant 'Crawlers' comb the wastes for 'salvage'. Players are part of the 'Salvage Union', on one of these roaming Crawlers and deploy out in jury-rigged Mechs to collect salvage and investigate their ruined world. Description Playing Salvage Union means playing a crew of salvager mech pilots living aboard a massive, mobile home base called a Union Crawler, scavenging a corporate-ravaged wasteland for scrap to keep their community alive. Beyond raiders and rival scavengers, threats include monstrous Bio-Titans, alien Meld, and the Corpos who still control most of the world's remaining resources. Much of the game's appeal comes from its two-layered loop: narrative exploration and salvaging runs outside the mech, and tactical, resource-managed mech combat once things go loud, tied together by a deep crafting system that lets pilots build and refit their machines from scavenged parts between missions.

Back in 2015, I discovered S. John Ross’s classic 1993 game, Risus: The Anything RPG. It was free, modular, ultra-flexible, and simple to pick up, but as I played more TTRPG's like DND5e, I missed the iconic d20 and the drama of critical hits and misses. I created GATEWAY RPG to capture that same beginner-friendly spirit while bringing back the thrill of the twenty-sided die and being able to use it for any setting. Whether you are running quick one-shots, playing standalone adventures, diving into solo sessions, or modularly introducing advanced rules as your group learns, GATEWAY adapts seamlessly to your table. GATEWAY RPG and Aurican's Lair are a Not-For-Profit Tabletop Roleplaying Game publisher.

Woe To The Wicked

Beginner-friendly
English
Woe To The Wicked is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about adventurers finding their place in a damaged world and deciding what is worth rebuilding. Explore ruined places, recover supplies, confront dangerous creatures, and navigate the interests of people trying to survive. Begin with a shared Stronghold and build relationships that can lead to greater responsibilities. A repaired road, a rescued person, or a restored workshop can matter as much as winning a fight. The game combines tactical combat, exploration, social encounters, crafting, and character growth through practiced Skills and learned Techniques. Its approach is simple: describe what you want to accomplish, choose your method, and resolve the uncertainty. A Monster's Tail

Beginner-friendly
English
A Monster's Tail is a monster-catching tabletop roleplaying game about young trainers and the creatures they travel with, published by Five Points Games, a small studio based in Mesa, Arizona. It is a Powered by the Apocalypse game, inspired by video games such as Pokémon, Digimon, Dragon Warrior Monsters and Jade Cocoon. It was funded on Kickstarter between February 20 and March 21, 2024, raising $13,577 against a $10,000 goal from 201 backers. The system is heavily inspired by Apocalypse World, the game that created the Powered by the Apocalypse family. Description Players take on trainers in Hayle, a region of travel, exploration and coexistence between humans and Genmon, the monsters at the heart of the game. The Game Master (GM) runs rival trainers with competing dreams and the wild places between towns. There is no fixed goal, and the theme is coming of age: players are expected to return home changed. The game is built around dilemmas rather than plots, and one of its guiding principles is "Create Interesting Dilemmas, not Interesting Plots." It suits a table that wants a light, story-led game and is comfortable inventing monsters on the fly.

Apocalypse World

Beginner-friendly
English
Apocalypse World is a post-apocalyptic tabletop roleplaying game by D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker, published by Lumpley Games. The first edition came out in 2010, and a second edition, funded on Kickstarter in 2016, updated some mechanics and playbooks and added Meguey Baker as co-designer. It won the 2010 Indie RPG Awards for Game of the Year, Best Support and Most Innovative Game, the 2011 Golden Geek RPG of the Year, the 2011 Lucca award for Best Role-Playing Game and a 2025 ALA Platinum Play Classics award. It introduced the Powered by the Apocalypse engine, which other designers have used to make more than four dozen licensed games, and critics credit its move-based action system as an important milestone in RPG design. The system is the origin of Powered by the Apocalypse. Description Players take on survivors of a collapsed world, each drawn from a playbook such as the Hardholder, Gunlugger, Battlebabe, Driver, Chopper, Hocus, Brainer, Savvyhead or Skinner. The Master of Ceremonies (MC), the game's name for its Game Master, does no pre-planning, and the setting is only implied until the players flesh it out during character creation, so each playbook adds details, such as the Hardholder ruling the local settlement. The game's themes are survival and relationships, and its tone is notably lethal. The game asks a table to play to find out what happens. The MC is also a player, so there are no fixed encounters, and the characters' relationships and the threats around them drive the story. It suits groups who want a tense, character-driven game and are happy with a GM who does not prepare a plot.
